France: US shutdown slams gates on world war memorials overseas
The US government shutdown is affecting sites outside the United States, as the American cemetery in Suresnes, west of Paris, was closed to visitors on Wednesday. The cemetery holds the remains of 1,541 Americans who died in the first world war, and 24 unknown Americans from the second world war.
Public sites in the US were closed from Tuesday as a result of a federal government shutdown, after Congress failed to reach an agreement on spending. Overseas sites were that were affected by the shutdown includes several more cemeteries across France and continental Europe, as well as in Mexico, Panama, Tunisia and the Philippines. The sites are maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission, funded by the US government.
