      Greece: Olympic torch handed over to Ovechkin ahead of Sochi 2014

      The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic torch was lit in a traditional ceremony in Olympia on Sunday. Actors and actresses dressed in historic costumes followed a dance especially choreographed for the occasion by Artemis Ignatiou.

      Following a recital of an extract of the poem "The light of Olympia" by Takis Doxas and several speeches, the High Priestess, Ino Menegaki passed over the flame to Yannis Antoniou, the first Greek torchbearer, who then delivered it to the first Russian torchbearer, hockey player Alex Ovechkin.

      Russian professional ice hockey winger Alexander Ovechkin missed his team, the Washington Capitals' final preseason game on Saturday in order to participate in the start of the Olympic torch relay in Greece.
