USA: Rouhani hints at thawing relations with the US
Iranian president Hassan Rouhani welcomed continuing progress on negotiations with the United States on Friday at a press conference on the fringes of the United Nations General Assembly.
"You are aware that after 35 years of great tensions between Iran and the US and the very numerous issues that persist in the relationship, a meeting of the presidents for the first time would naturally come with complications of its own," said the President. "The two sides wanted to have a completely successful and effective meeting. I think that the environment that has been created as a result of this early discussion is quite different to the past, and those that were responsible for this coming about are the people of Iran."
While the two presidents will not meet during this session of the UN, lower-level diplomatic conferences have been taking place between Iranian and US officials.
