USA: Clegg stands firm on UK support for Syrian opposition
Deputy UK Prime Minister Nick Clegg reiterated UK support for the Syrian opposition during his address to the United Nationas General Assembly on Friday.
Commenting on the proposed peace process to end Syria's crisis he said "We're in close touch with our partners in convening a second Geneva conference as soon as possible. No meaning political solution can occur without the moderate Syrian opposition. We recognise the Syrian National Coalition as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people. And we recognise their committment to the Geneva process and to building the secular, democratic and pluralist Syria that assures equal rights for all."
He accused the Assad regime of direct responsibility for the chemical weapons attack on a Damascus suburb in August: "In the issue of chemical weapons in Syria the Assad regime committed a war crime under international humanitarian law on the 21 st August, launching a large scale chemical weapons attack on his own people."
The Syrian National Coalition (SNC) was formed in November last year and is recognised by more than 100 countries as a legitimate representative of the Syrian opposition. Britain has already spent 38.5 million pounds ( €46 million) in supporting the National Coalition with military equipment including armored vehicles and body armour.
