Pakistan: Hundreds dead in quake that raised new island
Up to 327 people have been killed and more than 440 injured in a strong earthquake that struck southwest Pakistan on Tuesday. Ordinary villagers are now attempting to deal with the consequences of the earthquake, which has left homes completely and utterly destroyed.
The US Geological Survey first measured the earthquake at 7.8 after it struck Balochistan, just 69 km north-northeast of Awaran. A red alert was issued by the agency, which estimates that over 1,000 people could have been killed during the tragedy, with damages estimated at over $1 billion. At least 30 percent of the houses in the impoverished Awaran district have been destroyed, according to local sources.
The earthquake also created a new island off Pakistan's Gwadar coastline. The new island stands approximately half a mile into the sea. A bemused crowd reportedly gathered to observe the phenomenon of the new island, which apparently has a mountainous terrain.
