Germany: "Pumpkin Olli" breaks record for largest pumpkin in the state

Oliver Langheim, also known locally as "Kuerbis Olli" (German for "Pumpkin Olli"), has grown a whopping 700 pound (320 KG) giant pumpkin in Fuerstenwalde, Germany in time for the Halloween festivities. The Pumpkin is set to be a record breaker for the state of Berlin and Brandenburg. Though it is not his personal best, Langheim is still hitting the headlines as Berlin-Brandenburg's master pumpkineer. Langheim says that his passion for pumpkins started with a small family bet. Langheim's father challenged him to grow a larger Pumpkin than him, for a crate of beer, and his passion grew from there.

Langheim spends up to three hours looking after his prize vegetable daily, ensuring that moisture of the soil, temperature, food levels and other factors are all at the ideal level for peak growth. He even covers the vegetable with a blanket at night to ensure that the temperature does not drop too low which may affect its growth rate. Langheim can currently only make an educated guess at the weight of the Pumpkin, though all will be revealed on September 29, 2013 when he will take it to a weigh-in at the weighing championships in Klaistow, Germany. It will also then travel to Ireland where it will be paraded along side other large or attractive specimens at the Virginia Halloween Pumpkin Festival.

The world record for the biggest ever Pumpkin is currently held by Ron Wallace of Rhode Island, US who grew a Pumpkin that weighed in at more than a ton.
