Syria: Israel should destroy its nuclear weapons - Syrian deputy PM
Syria's Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil said in an interview with RT in Damascus Friday, that if Syria destroys its stockpile of chemical weapons, Israel should do the same with its nuclear weapons to ensure a balance of power in the region.
Jamil said: “President Putin’s words are quite rational and in order to achieve a real balance, the liquidation of Israeli nuclear weapons should take place. This goal should be included in the agenda. But I believe Russian authorities have asked US authorities to promise not to attack Syria in exchange for the liquidation of our chemical weapons. And that was a correct and well-timed decision. But if Syria liquidates its chemical weapons, I suppose that the door will be left open, and more legal cases for the liquidation of nuclear weapons in the region will surface, and that means Israeli weapons.”
US and Russian officials reached an agreement Saturday calling for an inventory of Syria's chemical weapons programme within a week, with the weapons and technology to develop them to be eradicated by mid-2014.
