Russia: Putin lambasts excessive Western 'political correctness'
Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed the importance of Russian unity and independence, and expressed the view that many Western countries are losing touch with their roots during a Thursday speech. He made the remarks during the 10th session of the Valdai Discussion Club at a venue on the banks of Lake Valdai, in the Novgorod region.
President Putin said: "The sovereignty, independence, unity of Russia are undoubtedly the red lines that should not be crossed. Given the differences in our opinions and different discussions, the future will not be successful without the participation of all players."
The Russian president also said: "We witness many euro countries refusing and forgetting their roots, including the values of Christianity which formed the basis of their civilization. They are refusing from any ethical basis, any identities - national, religious or even gender. They are following a policy which makes families with many children equal to same-sex families, faith in God equal with faith in Satan. An excesses of political correctness leads us to the registration of political parties which pursue the propaganda of paedophilia. Representatives in many countries are afraid of mentioning their religiosity, even cancelling some festivities. They are hiding the basis of such festivities. They are trying to impose this model on everyone. I am convinced this leads us to degradation and primitivization."
Putin meets with Valdai Discussion Club members every year. However, Thursday was the first time Putin had taken part in the final panel discussion, this year held under the theme "Russia's Diversity for the Modern World".
The Valdai Club was established by RIA Novosti and the Council for Foreign and Defence Policy in 2004 and has become a unique venue for communication between the Russian and international intellectual and political elite.
