Switzerland: 'Words of Syrian regime not enough' - Kerry

US Secretary of State John Kerry said in a Thursday statement in Geneva, Switzerland, that when it comes to statements by the Syrian government that they will submit information on chemical weapons stockpiles to the United Nations, words are simply not enough. Kerry's statement came amid a joint press conference at the InterContinental Hotel with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Kerry said: "I have seen reports that the Syrian regime has suggested that as part of the standard process, they ought to have 30 days to submit data on their technical, on their chemical weapons stockpile," said Kerry. "We believe there is nothing standard about this process at this moment because of the way the regime has behaved, because not only the existence of these weapons, but they have been used. And the words of the Syrian regime, in our judgement, are simply not enough."

Earlier on Thursday, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad stated in an interview on Russian television that Syria will join the Chemical Weapons Convention and that it will put its chemical weapons under international control. In the coming two days Lavrov will present the Russian plan of how to disarm Syria of its chemical weapons to his American counterpart. After the talks have ended, the UN Security Council will not meet to discuss the issue.
