Germany: Performers who bend over backwards for a great show
Performers practiced, stretched and warmed their muscles before their final performance at the International Contortionist Convention in the German city of Bergisch Gladbach on Wednesday. The convention has returned to Germany after being moved to Las Vegas 13 years ago.
Although this west German city isn't as glitzy or showy as Vegas, it is hosting for three days the world's top contortionists. Irina Vashchenko, an internationally renowned contortionist, began her career in former Soviet Russia over thirty years ago and now teaches classes in Berlin. This is also the first year pole acrobatics has been included into the performance and showcases German champion Alina Schmidt.
The idea for the convention came from Ska Von Schoening in 1998. The first convention was held in Dresden.
