Turkey: Protesters set streets ablaze with fireworks
Fireworks and gunfire ripped through Istanbul as battles continued to rage between police and protesters who had taken to the streets after another protester died on Tuesday. Ahmet Atakan died after reportedly being struck in the head by a tear gas cannister on Monday in a pre-dawn protest in Antakya. The protest was against construction of a road through a university in Ankara.
Protests had exploded in Istanbul on Monday in support of Berkin Elvan, a 14-year-old left in a coma after reportedly being struck by a police tear gas cannister during Gezi Park protests on June 16. Activists on Tuesday continued to call for further demonstrations in Taksim Square, a focal point for protests in Istanbul against the Erdogan government, which protesters believe to be authoritarian.
Protests were also planned against police violence in the Turkish capital, Ankara, where for several days university students have clashed with police over a municipal project to build a road across part of the campus of Middle East Technical University (METU).
