USA: UN urges Syria to hand over chemical weapons
The United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, echoed calls from Russia for Syria to hand over its chemical weapons during a press conference in New York on Monday.
Ban Ki-moon said that he is "considering urging the Security Council to demand the immediate transfer of Syria's chemical weapons" in a bid to prevent them being further used, claiming that it "would be the proper thing for Syria to do".
The comments came following his visit to the G20 summit meeting in St. Petersburg on Saturday. Syria was at the top of the summit's agenda, with recent allegations concerning the use of chemical weapons in an attack on August 21 dominating the talks.
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem, welcomed the initiative put forward by Russia's Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, during a press conference in Moscow on Monday. Meanwhile, United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, has said that US military intervention in Syria could be prevented if they agreed to hand over their chemical weapons supplies.
