Russia: Army brings out high-tech toys to play
Russian Army artillery units demonstrated their combat prowess in the Krasnodar region Friday, training with various types of combat vehicles and practising with high-tech gadgetry.
Troops demonstrated loading and firing the 220mm Uragan 9K57 rocket launcher, dubbed the "Hurricane" for short, and the 122mm Grad multiple rocket launcher system (MRLS). The BM-21 Grad is a truck-mounted field rocket system designed to hit targets up to 20km away. Originally developed in the 1960s, the Grad has seen battlefield operation in conflicts across the globe from Vietnam to South Ossetia.
Soldiers also fired shells from the 152mm self-propelled howitzer 'Akatsiya' 2S3, 122mm self-propelled howitzer 2S1 'Gvozdika'. Both self-propelled artillery pieces can fire multiple shell types, including high-explosive, armour-piercing, flechette and chemical rounds. The 2S1 weighs 16 tonnes with a full crew of four, and can move at more than 50km/h, while striking targets between 15 and 21 kilometres away.
