Russia: "Next move on Syria should be mandated by UN Security Council" - Chinese FM
Spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry Qin Gang said that China, like Russia, hopes for a peaceful resolution to the Syrian conflict without military intervention in St. Petersburg on Thursday during the G20 summit. US President Barack Obama is expected to lobby for foreign support for a military strike against Damascus at the summit, but Qin Gang says that China does not support such a strike without the approval of the UN Security Council.
He said: "We think that any move or next move on Syria should be mandated by Security Council of the United Nations. This is one of the basic principles of international laws governing the international relations. And on the issue of Syria, China and Russia have very similar positions. And we are both appealing for countries concerned to be serious about the possible consequences on the use of military means without the mandate of the UN Security Council. We both appeal for the political consultation in Syria which we believe this is only the way out of the tragic situation of Syria."
The G20 is the leading international cooperation forum, focusing on the most important global economic issues. The G20 leaders have been meeting regularly since the beginning of economic crisis in 2008.
