Germany: Samsung shifts up battle for smartwatch supremacy with Galaxy Gear

Wearable technology took another step towards the future Wednesday at the International Radio Exhibition Berlin (IFA) electronics fair, as South Korean electronics manufacturer Samsung unveiled its Galaxy Gear smartwatch. The watch can connect with Smasung's tablet computing devices and boasts a four-megapixel camera, speakers, voice controls, Wi-Fi, and a slew of health-related functions like heart rate monitoring and diet plans.

While the Galaxy Gear is the latest entry into the field known as "wearable technology," competing products are on the horizon. Sony is expected to start shipping its latest version, the SmartWatch 2, later in September, and earlier Wednesday German company PEARL showed off its latest smartwatch.

The IFA electronics fair previews some of the latest and greatest techno-creations soon by the world's top electronics manufacturers. The 2013 exhibitor list includes Canon, Adobe Systems, Sony, Siemens and Panasonic. Top awaited products include, among others, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Samsung printers with phone docks and the LG G Pad 8.3. It runs from Sept. 6-11.
