Russia: UN must conduct a thorough investigation of all sites, regardless of time
Russia's Foreign Ministry Wednesday urged the United Nations team investigating the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria to investigate all of the sites where the use of chemical weapons are suspected, not just those getting media attention. The investigation, spokesperson Aleksandr Lukashevich stated, must be "objective and comprehensive", all the more so because the Syrian government has expressed commitment to the process.
Lukashevich noted that the UN experts would deliver samples taken at the site of a chemical weapons incident near Damascus to a specialised laboratory in The Hague, but stated: “This should not interfere with the completion of the investigation process in the districts previously chosen in the framework of the agreement between the Syrian authorities and the UN Secretariat on August 13, 2013.”
The agreement stipulates that inspectors are to conduct investigations at three other locations besides, including Khan al-Assal, near Aleppo.
Lukashevich further encouraged investigators to take stock of the Russian report of their investigation into the suspected chemical attack in Khan al-Assal.
