UK: Cameron plans for Syria knocked back

British Prime Minister David Cameron attended a cabinet meeting at 10 Downing Street on Thursday, ahead of a crucial vote in the House of Commons on his government's proposal for military intervention in Syria. The Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government has conceded a second vote on the issue of immediate strikes, to be conducted at a later date.

Plans for a single vote authorising armed force were scuppered after rebel Conservative MPs threatened a revolt over the issue, while Labour leader Ed Miliband refused support unless a clause promising to wait for UN inspectors to finish their work was inserted. Miliband has urged all parties to remember the 'mistakes' made in the run-up to war in Iraq, and avoid rushing into conflict.

The US and UK governments have proposed intervening in the Syrian conflict since obtaining what they say is conclusive evidence that the Assad government ordered a chemical weapons attack on August 21, a charge that has been denied by Syrian officials.
