Syria: UN chemical weapons investigation ongoing with NATO attack looming

UN disarmament chief Angela Kane and a team of chemical weapons experts ventured out of their Damascus hotel Wednesday for a new tour of areas struck by a purported chemical attack last week. Their inspection is taking place amid warnings the United States and NATO forces are preparing to attack the Middle Eastern nation. The UN team investigating the allegations of chemical weapons use came under sniper fire Monday while en route to the area where the incident is alleged to have occurred.

Over 350 people are said to have been killed in the chemical attack. If confirmed, it would be the worst incident of chemical weapons use the world has seen since the 1980s.

US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has said United States forces are ready to strike Syria as soon as President Barack Obama gives the order. The USS Harry S Truman aircraft carrier and its accompanying battle group are currently in the Red Sea, while four destroyers are also in the region. An undisclosed number of nuclear-powered submarines are also believed to be lurking in the water off the Syrian shore.
