Syria: Russians evacuated prior to possible military strikes

Nearly ninety people, 75 Russians and 14 other CIS country citizens, flew out of the Syrian city of Latakia aboard a Russian government charter flight on Tuesday. The citizens were evacuated ahead of a possible attack on the country by NATO nations, led by the US and UK.

A second jet was dispatched to Latakia from Moscow to collect another group awaiting evacuation from the country ahead of possible military strikes. During the return flight the evacuees, mainly women and children, were offered support by several psychologists who were aboard the plane.

The plane they boarded, a Russian-built Emercom Ilyushin-76 jet, had just delivered 20,000 kilograms (20 tons) of humanitarian aid, consisting primarily of tinned foods and sugar, at the Bassel Al-Assad International Airport.

More than 700 people have been evacuated from Syria by Russia's EMERCOM since the beginning of 2013.
