Russia: Newest jet fighter among the best, rivalling foreign counterparts
Russia's newest jet fighter, the Su-30 SM, was revealed for the first time at the MAKS 2013 International Air show by the Irkut Corporation. The Su-30 SM jet fighter is expected to take part in the air show, performing a unique set of aerobatics tricks.
The multifunctional fighter jet is the newest development from the family of combat aircraft such as the Su-30MKI. The fighter, equipped with a radar that includes a phased antenna array and engines with thrust vector controls that provide better manoeuvrability. The jet is also capable of simultaneous detection of multiple targets and their termination both in the air and on the ground.
Barkovsky Alexander, Director of the Experimental 'Sukhoi' Design Bureau said, "We feel that this jet fighter is superior to its foreign analogs. Maybe on the level of the F35 jet fighter."
The jet's manoeuvrability makes it a very hard target for air defences. Russia has a contract for 60 of the multirole fighters, with an expected delivery date in 2016.
