Tunisia: Opposition launch campaign to topple government
Around 200,000 members of Tunisia's opposition bloc held a mass rally on Saturday outside the National Constituent Assembly (NCA) in the Tunis's Bardo Square. The rally had a festive atmosphere with Western music playing and flag-waving protesters chanting for the Islamist government's demise.
The rally kicks off a week-long anti-government campaign under the banner 'Rahel' (Departure) which calls on the government led by Ali Larayedh and the Ennahda Islamic party to step down. The initiative was announced on August 13 by the Popular Front opposition politician Hamma Hammami.
Protesters travelled from across the country for the rally. The NCA's progress in redrafting the constitution has been halted since the resignation of 70 opposition lawmakers.
