Belgium: EU condones Egypt violence - French FM
Foreign Ministers from the European Union held an urgent Foreign Affairs council meeting in Brussels on Wednesday, to discuss Egypt's recent unrest. The meeting was chaired by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton.
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius quickly condoned the situation, "The other position we can talk about is Egypt where there is an unified European stance on the matter, which is very good - we condone the violence and we are strictly demanding a political dialogue because we must go into these elections in an authoritative manner."
He continued saying that the EU will support the Egyptian population, "On the economic standpoint we have decided to maintain the support of the Egyptian population because the Egyptian population is suffering greatly right now. So we need to examine these relations and for the military strategy, France decided to take all the factors that can have an affect on the internal situation and to create general co-operation. But given the European position that has been established it is necessary to have the information and the desire to keep an open dialogue with the Egyptian population and their representatives, because we need to get things going to respect, of course, the Egyptian authority."
