Russia: Putin witnesses the art of weaponless war

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev attended an international sambo tournament in Sochi on Saturday, where they were joined by Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev. The three men watched sportsmen from Ukraine, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Russia and many other nations battle for the top prize.

The key fight of the tournament will feature Russia's 2013 champion Vyacheslav Vasilevskiy facing South African Trevor Prengli. Fedor Emelianenko, winner of multiple Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) championships, and Russian Sambo Association President Vladimir Shestakov also attended the tournament with the Russian and Kazakh leadership, which is taking place for the fourth time.

Sambo is a Russian martial art. The word is an acronym for SAMooborona Bez Oruzhiya, which translates as "self-defence without weapons". It was developed in the early 1920s by the Soviet Army to improve their hand-to-hand combat abilities.
