Gibraltar: Troubled waters ahead for fisherman caught in Spain / UK storm
The association of fishermen from La Linia de la Concepcion, a small town located close to the border of Gibraltar, has made an appeal on Friday, August 16 to protest against the reef built by Gibraltarian authorities as business takes a negative turn .
The local fishermen assured that they cannot fish anymore in these waters because the blocks break their nets and other fishing equipment used for trawling. They maintain that they have already had huge economical losses and that they feel stolen by both Gibraltarians and Spanish authorities.
"They do not have territorial waters, not even a small piece, and they are stealing our children's bread. Mr. Rajoy should know that. They are stealing from us, everything, everything, seafood, molluscs, clams, and we do not have the right to eat. And we are unemployed, I am unemployed", fisherman Angel Aranzana explained.
Another fisherman, Oscar Santos, also complained about the lack support and response from of the Spanish government: "No one can remove the blocks that they have dropped and we can't fish in there. If we were to use trawl equipment it would break. I have been already two months without working and I have had to apply for a public economical help. I couldn't even get the regular unemployment subsidy. We will have to keep on trying because we are not getting any economic support and no one is going to remove these blocks. There is nothing to do in that area, it is dead for us".
The dispute between both countries over Gibraltar is not the first one recorded, but the issue intensified as both Spain and the UK remain determined.
