Space: Cosmonauts on 398-minute spacewalk for future lab
Two Russian cosmonauts from the ISS-36/37 crew started on Friday what is expected to be a 398-minute spacewalk outside the Russian part of the International Space Station. Fyodor Yurchikhin and Alexander Misurkin, wearing the 'sea eagle' Orlan-MK space suits weighing 120 kg (265 lb), with liquid-crystalline on their chests to control body temperature, began the spacewalk mission at 14:39 GMT.
The International Space Station, the largest construction in space, needs new components added to the 15-year-old structure. The two cosmonauts are installing the fittings for a new Russian-built multipurpose laboratory module called 'Nauka', set to be launched in December 2013, along with an optical telescope, during the six hour and 38 minute long spacewalk. An experiment panel designed to expose materials to the space environment will also be lodged, so scientists can study the change in their properties.
