Iran: Ayatollah Khamenei leads Eid prayers for the nation
The Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Khamenei arrived to lead prayers in Tehran on Friday morning to mark the Muslim holiday of Eid Al Fitr, the Feast of Breaking of the Fast, while thousands participated in the holy event. Eid Al Fitr marks the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal and comes at the end of a Ramadan, a month when Muslims fast and avoid eating, drinking and smoking from dusk until dawn.
On Eid Al Fitr, Muslims are no longer allowed to fast, and complete a large prayer together in a congregation. The event was first initiated by the prophet Muhammad and sees Muslims donate money to the poor and needy as a requisite act of charity.
