Syria: Life of a Kurdish woman warrior amid the Syrian civil war

Female fighters from a detachment of the official militia of the Kurdish-controlled area of Syria found time to relax in this footage shot at the end of April at a training camp in the north-east of the country, taking a break from standing alongside their male comrades in battle against both government and militant forces.

The fighters, members of the Women's Protection Unit (YPJ), are affiliated to the People's Protection Unit (YPG), an armed militia group which which is an official part of the governing body of Kurdish territory in Syria, the Kurdish Supreme Committee. Initiated by the Supreme Committee and the nationalist Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), YPG forces have taken several important towns in the north of Syria, including An Al-Arab, Amuda and Efrin. YPG commander Sipan Hemo has stated the group's aim as pushing both government and opposition forces out of Kurdish-held areas.

In July, clashes between Kurdish fighters and anti-government forces flared after the Islamist Al-Nusra Front attacked a convoy of fighters from the YPG in Ras Al Ayn in Syria's north-eastern border area with Turkey. Casualties during the fighting included two citizens of the town of Ceylanpinar, which lies directly across the border in Turkey. According to Iranian TV channel Al Alam, militants from the Al-Nusra Front attacked the town of Tell Abyad near the Turkish border on Monday, killing 120 children and 330 women and elderly.
