Russia: Russian athletes limber up for Worlds
The Novogorsk athletics training base was open to the public on Monday ahead of the 2013 International Association of Athletics (IAAF) World Championship, to be held this year in Moscow.
Russian gold-medal hopefuls, high jumpers Anna Chicherova, Yelena Slesarenko and Ivan Ukhov, 100m relay runner Yulia Gushchina, 800m runner Mariya Savinova and hammer thrower Tatiana Lysenko, limbered up at the Novogorsk training centre near Khimki, close by to Moscow, with their eyes on the prize.
Discussing the Russian team's medal ambitions, the Russian team's head coach Valentin Maslakov said: "For us it is kind of difficult to be leading, as you know, America is an athletic country, while Russia is more a football nation. However, we have always taken at least second place at recent Olympic Games, World Championships, so we will try to compete with honour."
The IAAF World Championship will be hosted at Luzhniki Stadium in the Russian capital from August 10-18.
