Afghanistan: Nine killed after suicide bombers attack Indian consulate
Nine civilians were killed and twenty-three injured, among them children, after three suicide bombers attacked the Indian consulate in Jalalabad, Saturday.
The Taliban has denied any involvement with the attack and officials have not yet found any leads. The three suicide bombers apparently asked for directions to the consulate and once they arrived, two got out of the car wearing vests laden with explosives. The police fired upon them immediately and the third bomber proceeded to then blow up the car, leading to the deaths of the three assailants.
The incident took place near a mosque in the eastern Afghan city and follows a world-wide travel alert issued by the US on Friday. The United States has warned its citizens that the Al-Queda are planning many attacks during the month of August, particularly in North Africa and the Middle East. As a result the United States will be closing 21 embassies and consulates in the region on Sunday, including its Kabul mission.
