Spain: Mass held in memory for 79 lost in train crash
A mass funeral service was held on Monday in Santiago de Compostela for the victims of last week's train crash that saw 79 people perish, in the country's worst rail disaster. The service was attended by leading politicians, including Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy as well as several members of Spain's royal family.
12 people remain in critical condition following the crash. The disaster was caused by the train speeding, taking a bend in the line at over 100km/h, where safety requirements require the driver to slow down to 80km/h.
Francisco Jose Garzon Amo, the train's driver, has been charged with 79 acts of homicide. He has expressed regret and guilt for his actions, stating he wished he died in the accident. The train derailed and crashed with 218 people on board. The death toll was worsened by an explosion that led to fires spreading through the train's cabins.
