Brazil: Copacabana heaving with Brazilian faithful
More than three million worshippers flooded Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday for the final session of Pope Francis' week long visit to Brazil. The spiritual leader's address was held on a large white stage erected on the northern end of the beach.
The stretch of the crescent shaped shoreline was covered with people dancing in a festive medley of religiously themed music and singing. Hundreds of thousands slept on the chilly beach overnight in anticipation of the Argentine pope's Sunday mass.
Wearing a sombrero, the Pontiff delivered a speech in which he urged youth "to build a new world." The ceremony also signalled the end of World Youth Day, an event organised by the Catholic Church every Palm Sunday that urges acceptance of differing cultures and ways of living.
