Spain: "Tata" Martino assures Messi has nothing to with his signing

Gerardo Martino, commonly known as "Tata" Martino, was unveiled as the new coach of FC Barcelona on Friday. He signed a two-year deal at the club and will replace outgoing coach Tito Vilanova, who was forced to resign due to his ongoing battle with cancer. Martino arrived in Barcelona at exactly 17:20 and was greeted by FC Barcelona's director of football Andoni Zubizarreta at the airport.

At the press conference, Martino addressed rumours of his appointment by stating that four time world player of the year, Lionel Messi, had nothing to do with new position as manager, "we are both from Rosario, basically from Newell’s, and we do not know each other, this is the main point. It is true that once I said from Rosario, presupposing that it might have been something logical, an enquiry. But that has not been like this, taken into account what he [Lionel Messi] said. I can't say the opposite cause I was not there during the negotiations and conversations, just the one I had with the president and with Andoni [Zubizarreta]".

However, Martino had said in a press conference Tuesday that he was sure fellow Argentinian Messi and his father Jorge had put in a good word for him with the Barcelona hierarchy before the Catalan giants offered him the job.

Martino went on to dismiss claims that Messi and the club's latest star signing Neymar could be incompatible with each other, "I have never thought the two players that you mentioned [Lionel Messi and Neymar da Silva] cannot play together. In any case, if they cannot play together it is a failure of the trainer and not a problem with the players."
