Italy: Mafia takes a big hit after more than 100 arrested
A huge anti-mafia operation saw at least 65 suspects arrested in Calabria and another 50 near Rome including lawyers, doctors and entrepreneurs. Most of the detained are accused of belonging to a crime network, extortion, usury, international traffic of narcotic and psychotropic substances, corruption and infiltration in the administration.
The criminal organizations were mainly part of by the Spada clan and two other families, the Fasciani and the Triassi, and operated in the Southern region of Calabria, the capital and in the Ostia coast near Rome. The Triassi family is reported to be linked to the Sicilian mafia clan “Cosa Nostra”.
Around 500 police officers, dog units, a helicopter and coastal patrol boats were deployed in the operation, called “Nuova Alba”. Many police departments from all around the country participated in the investigation, which started last October. The authorities have proceeded to take the suspects into preventive custody and to confiscate their properties. The anti-mafia department has assured that it has collected enough evidences to prove their control over the area.
The Rome operation has been described by Italian media as the largest ever undertaken in the capital region. A senator, member of former Italian President Silvio Berlusconi party, Piero Aiello, is also under investigation.
