Ukraine: FEMEN shows nipples for Navalny
A member of Ukraine's FEMEN wing bore her breasts in protest to the conviction of Russian opposition leader Aleksey Navalny in Kiev on Thursday.
FEMEN's press service explained that Thursday's action protested the "Russian drama that played out today about Russia's opposition leader Alexei Navalny." FEMEN activists have performed several notable demonstrations against Russian President Vladimir Putin and were militant in their condemnation after Navalny's conviction: "This is something crazy is going on in Russia and nobody is trying to stop, to break this system, to stop Putin and his crazy dictatorship. We want to scream "Burn Russia! Burn dictators! Stand up from your knees and start the revolution!"
A Kirov court found Navalny and his accomplice guilty of embezzlement on Thursday. The court ruled that Russian state-owned lumber company, Kirovles, signed an 'unfavourable' contract with a business created by Navalny in 2009. The prosecution claimed that this contract cost Kirovles an estimated 16 million rubles ($493K, €377K).
Navalny and supporters claim that the trial is politically motivated and aimed at silencing the self-professed exposer of corrupt officials. Navalny now faces a five year sentence.
