France: Femen activist, the new Marianne on French stamps

Femen activist Inna Shevchenko has unseated the old face of the French Revolution as the new Marianne on the French stamp, which was presented in Paris on Monday by French President, Francoise Hollande, who chose from three final designs after a pre-selection process by French high school students.

A few hours after the stamp had been officially presented, Oliver Ciappa, who designed the picture along with David Kawena, tweeted that the stamp had been inspired by Femen leader, Inna Shevchenko. He stated that the inspiration comes from his view that Marianne was the original Femen, and that Femen activists represent liberty, equality and brotherhood. He added that the release of this stamp was proof of Femen's popularity among the French population, particularly young people.

Femen activist Inna Shevchenko said, "I would say that now we can be sure that this fight will be in the history, and we will make this history bigger, bigger for women." She also said, "All of those homphobes, facists, everytime when they have to send a letter, they will lick this stamp. This is pleasant to know"

Olivier Ciappa is also known for his photo exhibition in favor of gay mariage, that had been vandalised at the end of June in Paris. Olivier Ciappa is himself an activist, who has long fought for gay rights. He said that "she was fighting for equality, she was fighting for liberties, she was fighting for friendship, which are the values for the FEMEN, the values of the republic. So for me, Marianne, she was the first femen"

Shevchenko published a message on her twitter account showing her satisfaction: “FEMEN is on the French stamp. Now all homophobes, extremists, fascists will have to lick my ass when they want to send a letter.”

The "Liberty leading the people" painting by French artist Eugene Delacroix, commemorating the July Revolution of 1830, immortalised Marianne and her face became a familiar fixture on French stamps for decades.

Inna Shevchenko is a leading member of Femen, the Ukranian feminist activist group founded in 2008 and famous for baring their breasts at protests relating to sexism, religion and other issues. She has recently been granted political asylum in France after receiving threats following protests in Ukraine.

The Christian Democratic party leader, Christine Boutin, has already made an appeal to boycott the stamp.
