Egypt: Tourist heaven deserted while unrest continues

Beaches lay empty of sun worshippers on Tuesday as travellers upset by the unpredictable situation in Egypt abandoned the resort of Sharm al-Sheikh. Tourists cancelled holidays and travel agencies distributed refunds in the coastal city entirely geared around catering to foreigners.

The beaches are usually flooded with tourisits around this time of year as water sport enthusiast and sunbathers leave no free space on land or in water. However, as a result of the recent violent clashes between Morsi supporters and the opposition taking place 500km away in the capital Cairo, Sharm al-Sheikh has been left deserted with only a few tourists left on site.

Foreign ministries say that the travel hot spot is safe for foreigners despite Egypts unrest. Nevertheless, tourist attractions like diving, snorkeling and boat touring centres are missing valuable customers.

Damir, a diving instructor in the coastal city said: "Now, really in this time it is very quiet, too quiet. And I advise all tourists from Germany, from all over the world to come to Sharm El Sheikh and come to Egypt."

Damir continues to advice tourist to return to the Egyptian enterntainment capital with no mention of the rising violence in Cairo: "I advise everyone, go to Cairo, to see the pyramids. It is something wonderful, over the wall. We have Pyramids, we have the Sphinx, we have lots of monuments and it is beautiful and wonderful. It is the first civilisation over the world, and this one is Egyptian."
