Russia: Lavrov calls for elections in Egypt
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed his concern over events in Egypt on Tuesday at a press conference held with his Romanian counterpart Titus Corlatean in Moscow. Lavrov said Moscow supports any efforts at reaching a settlement in Egypt that would pave the way for new elections.
Russia's foreign minister said: "As we have said before, we are closely watching the events in Egypt. We support any efforts to stop all the manifestations of violence and confrontation and stabilise the situation, as well as put the situation back on the political track as soon as possible, which will allow us to prepare thoroughly and transparently for free and fair elections. This is important to establish peace in Egypt and create the necessary conditions for progressive development of the Egyptian economy and social sphere, which are now facing quite a number of problems."
Lavrov also stated: "It is also important to change the regional situation. Egypt is traditionally recognised as a strong leader in the region and in the Arab League, and today its leadership is clearly lacking. Unfortunately, the Egyptian authorities are too absorbed in the country's domestic instability to pay enough attention to regional problems. We do hope that the situation in Egypt goes back to normal as soon as possible so that all the major political stakeholders will be able to reach universally acceptable agreements and launch a political dialogue. This will bring peace to our friends, the Egyptian people, and contribute to efforts to stabilise the regional situation as well."
Bilateral relations between Russia and Romania were also on the agenda at the summit meeting, with a focus on economic, technical, scientific and military cooperation. During their meeting the ministers signed two important inter-governmental documents. One of these was an agreement to open the Russian Centre of Culture and Science in Bucharest and the Romanian Culture Institute in Moscow. The other deal concerns a program for cooperation in science, education, mass media, sport and tourism.
