Nicaragua: Ortega will gladly grant NSA leaker asylum
In an atmosphere of excitement and celebration, the President, Daniel Ortega, joined thousands of people on Friday celebrated the 34 Anniversary Tactical Withdrawal Masaya, one of the most important dates of the Nicaraguan revolutionary history.
Upon receiving an asylum request from NSA leaker Edward Snowden, Nicaragua's President, Daniel Ortega, said that he would allow so if circumstances permit. Ortega has not mentioned the conditions that would allow Snowden to take asylum in Nicargua. Ortega said, "You know what is the position of Nicaragua about this topic, we are an open and respectful country of asylum rights, and it is clear that if the circumstances allow it we will be glad to receive Snowden and give him asylum here in Nicaragua."
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said Friday that he has decided also to offer asylum to Snowden during a speech marking Venezuela's independence day. Icelandic MPs have also introduced a proposal in parliament to grant immediate citizenship to Snowden, but the idea has so far received minimal support.
The Nicaraguan celebration, unlike other years, began in the Place des Victoires, Managua which brought the Nicaraguan people to leave in convoy, led by Daniel and Rosario, to the indigenous community of Monimbó.
