Syria: Syrian Army making gains in shattered Homs
The Syrian Army's ongoing offensive against militant-held parts of Homs has taken control of Al Khaldiyeh and the Old City.
These gains follow recent victories for the Syrian Army in rebel-held areas close to the Lebanese border. Three weeks earlier, the army regained control of Qusayr and Talkalakh, former rebel strongholds used as hubs for smuggling weapons and fighters into the country. The army have targeted Al-Khaldiyeh and Bab Houd, which have been under the control of opposition groups for the past year.
These recent events have altered the stance of a number of Western powers towards opposition groups, leading the United States to announce that they would begin sending weapons to the Syrian opposition.
The United Nations estimate that more than 93,000 people have been killed since the conflict began in 2011.
