Croatia: Ministers meet ahead of national celebrations
Ministers of Foreign Affairs were in Zagreb during celebrations marking Croatia's entry into the European Union as its 28th member. Most stores, museums and official buildings were closed and extra contingents of police officers guarded every crossing in the city centre.
President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso and President of the European Council Herman van Rompuy joined Prime Ministers of the European Union along with other officials for the ceremony Sunday evening, a major milestone some 20 years after the country won independence in a bloody civil war.
The official programme of the accession ceremony featured several different artistic and technical performances to introduce Croatia's cultural and ecological value for the EU. Croatia applied for EU membership on March 21, 2003 and achieved official Candidate status on June 18, 2004. With its entry, Croatia becomes the third-poorest country in the EU, after Bulgaria and Romania.
