Egypt: Thousands sing and chant in praise of Morsi
Thousands of supporters of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi swelled in the Nasr City district of Cairo on Saturday. The demonstrators braved the sweltering heat to gather, singing and chanting the praises of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi in response to planned Anti-Morsi protests set to take place June 30.
Morsi supporters waved Egyptian flags, sprayed water, and chanted from the shoulders of fellow pro Morsi activists.
Egypt has been beset by deadly clashes, with supporters and opponents of Morsi staging mass demonstrations across Egypt. On Friday, clashes in the port city of Alexandria resulted in at least three deaths including an American citizen. Andrew Pochter was killed by injuries sustained from stab wounds to the chest while photographing protesters attempting to set fire to a Muslim Brotherhood building. Eighty others were wounded in the Alexandria clashes.
Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected head of state, celebrates the one-year anniversary of his inauguration on June 30. Anti-Morsi groups have organised massive rallies to coincide with the anniversary of Morsi's inauguration. Security has been heightened in anticipation of the protests and nearby banks have closed branches.
Mass anti-Morsi protests under the 'million-man rally' banner, were planned across Egypt on the same day. Opponents accuse Morsi of failing to address social and economic issues following his victory in the first election held after the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak.
