Russia: Gunmaker Kalashnikov flies to Moscow for medical treatment
A plane carrying ailing AK-47 assault rifle inventor Mikhail Kalashnikov arrived in Moscow on Sunday. The 93-year-old is set to receive medical treatment for pulmonary thrombosis, a blockage of the main artery serving the lung. Kalashnikov was airlifted on an Emergencies Ministry plane from Izhevsk, in the Urals, and is being taken to a hospital in the Russian capital.
The iconic gunsmith is reported to be in a serious condition. Abroad the flight, he received constant attention from a team of doctors who had access to hi-tech onboard medical facilities. While in hospital the small arms designer agreed to transfer the rights to use the Kalashnikov brand name to the Izhmash weapons factory, Russia's largest producer of military automatic and sniper weapons.
The engineer’s health is said to have deteriorated in December 2012 when he was admitted to intensive care. Up until his most recent hospitalisation, Kalashnikov attended work at the military plant in Izhevsk.
