Somalia: UN bomb blast kills more than a dozen
Armed militants attacked the the United Nations Development Programme compound in the Somalian capital Mogadishu on Wednesday, reportedly killing between 15 to 20 people. Islamist militant group Al Shabaab claimed on a Twitter account that it was responsible for the attack, and that it killed 16 UN workers, including three Britons, two Kenyans and a South African.
The Al Shabaab militants forced entry into the compound by detonating explosives in a vehicle at the gate, a blast which was heard and seen across town. A gun fight ensued with security forces lasted well over an hour, as Somali security forces and soldiers from the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) came to the scene to help expel the intruders.
Somalia has had no central government in control of the whole country since 1991, but the current government, backed by African Union troops, took back the capital Mogadishu in 2011 and now controls most cities.
