Spain: Barca's homage to Catalonia
Hundreds of fans of FC Barcelona waited in line Wednesday at the official store in Camp Nou to be the first ones to get their team's new away kit. For the first time in the club's history, FC Barcelona will have an away kit based on the Catalan flag, the "Senyera", made of red and yellow stripes. As with the team's home kit, the stripes peter out over the sleeves and the team's motto "More than a Club" is written in a label on the back of the neck.
Nike prepared a limited edition for the away kit. The first 2,013 t-shirts to be sold will have a serial numbers on the left sleeve. Each fan will be able to purchase only one kit of this special edition and, of course, as many as they want from the regular ones. The kits are made of recycled polyester from plastic bottles. A complete kit can be manufactured with 13 recycled bottles. The kit weighs only 150 grams (5.3 oz) and Nike state they are 23% lighter, whilst 20% stronger and more flexible than older kits.
FC Barcelona is well known for embracing and representing Catalan nationalistic ideology at cultural and political levels. As Sergi, a Barca supporter explains: "Well I think that Barca somehow represents Catalonia, because it's like the essence of the catalan spirit and it also involves politics itself, Barcelona". In respect to the shirt, Sergi went on to express: "I think this t-shirt is kind of cool, because it is like the Catalan flag, it's something national here, it's something important for us."
Barcelona will be playing an away game in Poland on the 20 July, where they will debut the shirts.
