UK: Many in the Syrian opposition are like the Woolwich murderer, says Putin

Leaders of the G8 countries gathered for the second and final day of the summit at the Lough Erne Resort in Northern Ireland Tuesday. Russian President Vladimir Putin held a press conference on the same evening talking about the results of the summit.

At the press conference Putin said that supplying arms to the rebels based on unconfirmed reports that chemical weapons were used by the Assad government would further destabilise Syria. Putin also urged Western nations not to be hasty in arming the Syrian opposition who he compared to the recent murderer, Michael Adebolajo, who publicly beheaded Drummer Lee Rigby with a knife and a meat cleaver on a street in Woolwich.

Putin then continued to say that providing such weapons could fall into the wrong hands or be uncontrollable. However, he did not rule out Russia signing new arms contracts with the Syrian government and stressed that all such contracts must conform with international law.

The Russian President told the press that he 'never felt isolated' at the summit despite differences in views, and said the G8 leaders have all been seeking a common solution to the Syrian conflict.

Russia and the US will spearhead the development of a peace plan for Syria by hosting a second Geneva Conference. The G8 countries have agreed that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and the US Secretary of State John Kerry will take on "main roles and the main burden of responsibility" for working out the principles of the solution to the crisis, he added.
