Brazil: Biggest display of dissent in decades hits Sao Paulo

Tens of thousands of people took the streets of Sao Paulo on Monday in what the country's largest newspaper, the Folha de Sao Paulo, calls the the biggest protest in Brazil since the impeachment of President Fernando Collor de Mello in 1992. The mostly peaceful march follows fierce clashes on Thursday June 13, in which police used teargas and rubber bullets during outbreaks of violence with protesters.

Thousands of people across the country took to the streets, protesting in Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Belem and several other cities against the rise of public transport fares and what demonstrators consider an excessive use of force by police at previous protests. June 2 saw the government raise bus tickets in Sao Paulo from 3 reals (€1, $1.40) to 3.20 an increase they say is below inflation.

However, as the Confederation's Cup, a test event ahead of the FIFA 2014 World Cup, is underway in Brazil, demonstrators' anger at the billions of taxpayers' money spent preparing for the event, alongside the 2016 Summer Olympics, over public services has ballooned. Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff has responded to the protests in an official statement, saying "Peaceful demonstrations are legitimate and belong to democracy. It is natural for young people to demonstrate".
