Russian multimillionaire, Dimitry Itskov, has been working on immortality since 2011 and expects to have achieved it within 30 years, he reported in the congress 'Avatar 2045' held in New York City's Lincoln centre, Sunday. The conference was held under the motto "Towards a New Strategy for Human Evolution".
His crew of 30 scientists are developing lifelike copies of humans, which will allow the human brain to upload to androids and feel their sensations. The project is to be completed by 2045, but in order to show the world that his ambitions are viable enough and that his intentions are not just the plot of Steven Spielberg's next film, he will start by creating an avatar of his own mind. He said to a packed conference hall: "Now it's the unique moment when I think the technology is advanced enough to be sure that it is not science fiction, it is reality. It is here, almost here."
Panellists included not only scientists, but also spiritual leaders from a wide range of faiths. A panel was held specifically on the compatibility of faith and science, with many raising moral concerns over technological advancement. In an interview for the CNBC, Itskov assured: "I am trying to create the full artificial body for the human beings; I am trying to create a new biology". He added: "The goal of the project is trying to create the body which would be similar to the human body from the point of view of sensations".
The project has four phases and three of them are already set in motion. Stage A, which is due to be completed by 2025, creates lifelike avatars which humans will be able to "mentally" occupy, allowing people to have the same sensations as their avatar. Stage B is brain transplantation into the android. Stage C would see the the android become a complete machine by uploading the brain into the avatar's computer. Stage D, which Itskov envisages will be accomplished by 2045, aims to replace the physical body with a hologram.
The "Avatar 2045" is pitched as the technological wing of human evolution: "The project is a kind of transition for the human beings. A transition that will allow us stop ageing, to get rid of diseases and finally to live almost immortal", declared Itskov in his interview for the CNBC. During the conference, Itskov showed his intentions go beyond the merely medical: "Human beings should be free, free from death, free from limitations, from gravity, even from the biology maybe", declared Itskov.
How expensive this technology will be is unspecified, but such technology will not be cheap. Those who do not want to resign to a limited life in their current bodies should start saving.
