Turkey: Protesters defy Erdogan's 'final warning' with piano concert

Germany's travelling pianist Davide Martello struck the ivory keys again Thursday night, receiving a standing ovation in the middle of Istanbul's Taksim Square. After he finished his performance, onlookers thanked him with flowers and hugs.

During Martello's concert, other pianists took the stage as well as he stood in the audience and praised their musical ability. "That's the future", he said.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a 'final warning' Thursday morning to protesters, threatening protesters by saying he would allow police to use rubber bullets. Despite the warning, thousands remained in Taksim during the night. Many listened to Martello's performance, facing the police in solidarity, while others were simply moved to tears. The performance was well received, even by some police in Taksim Square.

The classically-trained Martello, who began playing at the age of seven, performed self-composed original pieces. The performance was part of Martello's touring show KlavierKunst, or "Piano Art". Martello travelled 1,300 miles (1,609 kl) from his hometown in Konstanz Germany to Istanbul, the heart of Turkey's protest movement.

Martello also commented on Turkey's current political struggle, saying: "The politicians have to get inspired. They have to make love, for girlfriends, wives, they have to be happy, and then they can make good politics".

Martello claimed via his Facebook page to be bringing a message of 'peace and freedom' to the Turkish protests, claiming that his purpose was to remind police and demonstrators that they 'are all one family'.

The Turkish government says that up to 600 police have been injured in clashes while Turkey's Medical Association said that around 5,000 people have sought treatment in hospitals after enduring attacks of tear gas. The fifth confirmed death related to protest violence was announced Thursday.

The unrest began on May 31 when environmental activists staged a sit-in in Taksim Gezi Park to protest the planned destruction of the park for commercial development. The government response, which officials have acknowledged was 'heavy-handed', mobilised more protest that evolved into an anti-government movement, spreading to 78 other major cities across Turkey, including the capital Ankara.
