Syria: Qusayr littered with aftermath of battle
Soliders of the Syrian army continued to consolidate their control of the strategic town of Qusayr on Wednesday, after winning a major victory in the country's ongoing conflict on June 5 when government forces took back the town from militant fighters.
Qusayr, located near the border with neighbouring Lebanon, is a key supply route for both sides, and had been held by anti-govrernment fighters since February 2012. Capturing the town was hailed by Syrian army commanders as a step towards cutting off the supply of weapons and reinforcements to militia groups, as well as isolating the areas of the country still under militant control.
A Syrian army commander involved in the offensive said: "The Syrian Army's morale is very strong in general, but it became even stronger after this easily won and rapid victory over the armed terrorist groups".
Following the victory in Qusayr, army elements continued their advance on the militant stronghold of Aleppo. The expected battle to retake the town may prove to be an important turning point in a war that has claimed the lives of over 80,000 people so far, and forced 1.6 million to flee the country.
