USA: Black Forest fire threatens thousands in Colorado
Wildfire blazed through the Black Forest area northeast of Colorado Springs on Wednesday, engulfing houses and spurring widespread evacuations. Thick smoke billowed over the heavily wooded area in rural Colorado, while military and national guard forces were deployed to the area to control the evacuation.
The Black Forest fire was first reported at 1pm local time near Shoup Road and Highway 83. Officials have not yet determined the cause of the fire, but have issued evacuation orders for more than 3,600 people from the area northeast of Colorado Springs.
High temperatures and fast, hot winds fuelled the fire, ravaging 400 acres and causing officials to issue evacuation orders for more than 2,500 homes. No fatalities have been reported so far
while the resources of fire fighters are split between tackling the rapidly growing Royal Gorge Fire elsewhere in Colorado, which had expanded across 3,800 acres by Tuesday evening.
